Driver Succumbs to Heart Attack

The driver of a car that ran off a Winterset street Tuesday apparently was stricken with a fatal cardiac arrest moments before the crash. Henry Mathews, 36, of Winterset, died Tuesday afternoon about 4 p.m. Mathews was northbound on N. 1st Ave. near W. Filmore street when his car suddenly swerved off the road into a tree. Madison County Emergency Technicians attempted to revive him at the scene. Officer Ken Billiter said it appeared he had a heart attack prior to the crash.

Mathews was employed at C. Meyers AGI and was formerly from Des Moines. A woman passenger in the car was not injured.
