Earlham Echo
Earlham, Iowa
Thursday, June 13, 1946

Elizabeth Mary Dowlin was born near Carmichaels, Green county, Pennsylvania, November 9, 1864, and passed away at the home of her son Harvey on May 28th, 1946 at the age of 81 years, six months and 17 days.

At the age of 16 she moved to Greenfield, Adair county, Iowa, with her parents at which place she resided until her marriage.

On October 10, 1883 she was married to Elmer Ellsworth Payton on the I. N. Hewitt farm near Blockton, Taylor county, Iowa. They made their home in Taylor county for the first eleven years of their married life. To this union was born five children, Eva Maude (Mrs. P. M. Ohrt) of Earlham; Harvey Paul of Menlo; Celinda Mae, deceased; Ira D. of Denver, Colorado; and Elfleda Ruth (Mrs. F. P. Bryan) of Des Moines.

Mrs. Payton has been a member of the Methodist church since 1884, when she united with the church at Plattville, Iowa. The Payton family moved to Stuart in 1894 and Mrs. Payton spent the remaining years of her life in Dallas, Guthrie, Madison and Adair counties.

Mr. and Mrs. Payton were privileged to celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary on October 10, 1933.

Mr. Payton preceded his wife in death on April 8, 1937.

Grandmother Payton readily made friends wherever she lived and was never one to spare herself in times of need or trouble. The life of her family and neighbors was her life, each one receiving the sincere considerations and help which only she could give. Family reunions were her delight and she spent many hours planning and promoting the Payton family reunion each year. Those who were privileged to know her will never forget her interest and close relationship in the family group. This was equally and more intimately true with her own immediate family. This close association was equally shared by each of her grandchildren.

Her passing will leave a place that can never be filled and the regrets of those left behind is not that she has gone to the rest she so justly deserved but a regret that they failed to express and show the full gratitude and appreciation which they so keenly felt.

Besides her sons and daughters, Grandmother Payton is survived by one sister, Mrs. Anna Miller of Eureka, Kansas, and her seven grandchildren Betty Marie and Paul Marion Ohrt of Earlham; Hazel Mae Jackson of Menlo; R. Payton and James Paul Bryan of Des Moines; Robert Wayne and Ronald Ira Payton of Denver, Colorado; and two great grandchildren, Paul and Lewis Jackson of Menlo, Iowa.

Funeral services were held in the Dexter Methodist church, Friday, May 31st, at 2 o’clock. Interment in the Dexter cemetery.
