James McKinsey Holmes was born in Tuscarawas county, Ohio, near Newcomers town on September 4, 1849 and died on July 13, 1922. He was the tenth child of William and Elizabeth Holmes, having 6 sisters, 4 brothers.

When he was six years of age he moved to Van Buren county for 3 years, then to Madison county. In 1873 he married Elizabeth Priest. To this union were born 3 children, 1 dying in infancy. His wife died October 12, 1878. On February 27, 1884 he married Anna Carter of St. Charles. Three children, 2 daughters, 1 son were born to them. In October of 1921 his second wife died at home of their daughter, Mrs. John Perkins of Weldon, Ill.

Surviving are Mrs. W. D. Smith of near Truro, Mrs. Charles W. Patterson of near Osceola, Mrs. John Perkins of Weldon, Illinois, Mrs. E. Hendrickson of Cumming, Iowa and 1 son Guy of Clarion, Iowa.

Truro

J. Holmes who has been making his home with his daughters, Mrs. Chas. Patterson and Mrs. Will Smith the past year, died at the home of Mrs. Smith last Thursday morning. The funeral was held Saturday from the Christian church and the body laid to rest in the Hartman cemetery by the side of his wife.

James McKinsey Holmes was born in Tuscarawas county, Ohio, near newcomer’s town, on September 4, 1849, and died July 13, 1922, being 72 years, 10 months and 9 days of age. He was the tenth child of William and Elizabeth Holmes, having six sisters and four brothers.

When he was 6 years old his parents moved to Van Buren county where they made their home for three years. They then moved to Madison county where he grew to manhood.

In the year of 1873 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Priest. To this union was born three children, one dying in infancy. On October 12, 1878, death visited this home and took his companion away. For a number of years he lived with his aged mother and two small daughters.

On February 27, 1884, he was united in marriage to Anna Carter of St. Charles. To this union three children were born, two daughters and one son. In October, 1921, another great sorrow came to this home when Mrs. Holmes died at the home of their daughter, Mrs. John Perkins, of Weldon, Ill.

At this time he came to Iowa and lived with his daughter Mrs. Charles W. Patterson, of Clarke county. At the time of his death he was living with his eldest daughter, Mrs. W. D. Smith, also of Clarke county.

Although Mr. Holmes was not a member of any church he believed in his God and that all things were for the best. He has been a great sufferer for a number of years from which he asked to be released by death where he could rest.

He leaves to mourn his death five children, Mrs. W. D. Smith of near Truro; Mrs. Charles W. Patterson of near Osceola; Mrs. John Perkins of Weldon, Illinois; Mrs. E. Hendrickson of Cummings, Iowa, and the one son Guy of Clarion, Iowa; twenty grandchildren; five great grandchildren and many near relatives.

Funeral services were held at the Christian church at Truro, Rev. Raybourn having charge. Interment at the Hartman cemetery with seven other brothers and sisters.
