On last Thursday morning at two o’clock, the spirit of Aunt Rebeka Hiatt, took its flight for a brighter and better home. She was one of the pioneers of the vicinity having lived here for nearly half a century. For nearly two years, she had been a great sufferer.

The funeral services were held at the Christian church, conducted by a former pastor, Rev. L. E. Follansbee, after which the remains were laid to rest beside her husband in the Peru cemetery.

Death Calls a Pioneer

Rebecca Jane Pearson Hiatt departed this life at her home in Peru, on August 31st, at the age of 83 years, 1 month and 7 days. She was born in Clinton county, Ohio, in 1828. At the age of eight years, she moved with her parents to Marion, Grant county, Indiana, where she was married Nov. 29, 1848 to Jesse Hiatt. The husband preceded her in death 13 years ago.

Mr. and Mrs. Hiatt were pioneer residents of Madison county, having moved to Peru in 1856 55 years ago. She died on the old home place about two miles from Peru. She reared a large family, four of whom: S. L. Hiatt, N. W. Hiatt and Sarah Hiatt of East Peru and Mrs. O. D. Silverthorne of Hebron were at her bedside during the last few days of her illness.

They were charter members of the Christian church, organized in an early day at Peru. She remained constant in the faith till the end, finding comfort and assurance in the promises of the scriptures during her long illness. Her trials for many years had been particularly severe on account of the sad affliction coming to members of her family, yet with unfaltering trust and patience, she endured all until life’s triumphant close.

Funeral services were held at the Peru Christian church on Saturday, Rev. L. E. Follansbee of Des Moines conducting the services, and burial immediately following in the Peru cemetery. Thus, one by one the sturdy pioneers who came to the country in early days are answering the summons to that finer country, where sickness, pain and death are unknown.
