Archibald Holmes was born in Tuscarawas county, Ohio, 6 Jan 1833. He married Eliza Jane Middleton 1854 and shortly after moved to Van Buren county, Iowa and in 1859 they came to Madison county. Nine children were born to this union. Austin M.; Curtis L.; Elizabeth and Florence are deceased. Surviving children are, Mrs. John Switzer of Osceola, Isaac E. Holmes and Mary Lyons of Truro; Horace H. Holmes of Des Moines; James W. Holmes of Lincoln. His wife died in March 1869 and he married a second time in 1873 to Mrs. Martha Caskey who died in 1912. Burial was made at the Hartman cemetery.

A 2nd clipping says died June 30, one of last of the pioneers, Reuben Foster & Moses Canfield still remaining, of the group which located here at the same time. Residing here since 1856. Vet. of Co. F., of 39th Iowa. 4th vet to die this week, James Kale, Wm. Crow & James V. Kirk being the other three.
