Page 7, Column 4John William Delong, son of H. F. and Elizabeth Delong, was born December 2, 1886, near Truro, Iowa, where he grew to manhood and was married to Anna L. Abegg, August 4, 1908, but this home was broken by the untimely death of the wife on May 2, 1909. On August 25, 1912, he was married to Miss Edith J. Ginn of Indianola. One child came to this home but its stay was ended by its death in infancy.

On December 20, 1917 he entered his country’s service and with his company sailed for France May 9, 1918, landing May 20th. John W. Hampton, first lieutenant 328th Infantry in writing a member of the family, said: “On September 25th at retreat, the company was being inspected by the company officers, when Delong drew his automatic pistol from the scabbard for inspection, the pistol was fired accidentally. He was unable to make any statement, and went to his maker with a smile on his face, a true American hero…for his flag and country”. Thus ended the life of John William Delong.
He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, father, mother, five sisters, together with many other relatives and friends. Burial services were held in Truro Methodist church on Sunday, October 23, conducted by Rev. J. O. Carder, the remains being buried in the Hartman cemetery.
