Eunice Dreyer, 100, of Winterset and formerly of Atlantic, passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2015, at West Bridge Care and Rehab in Winterset.
It was a beautiful day September 11, 1914, in Anita, Cass County, Iowa, when the 13th child was born to Peter and Nellie Jane (Demming) Scott. Her name was chosen by her older sisters, Inez and Zeta. At a very early age she showed interest in sewing. By the age of 8 she had embroidered enough blocks for a quilt. She was told by her mother if she every needed to earn her own living, she could use her needle and thread. Her quilts have been enjoyed by many as she donated several crib quilts to the Madison County Quilting Club. Eunice was featured in a national quilting magazine for her work. During her lifetime she expanded her abilities to include crocheting, tatting, needlepoint, picture painting, small wood crafting, crewel, beadwork, and plastic canvas. In her later years she made a Christmas village scene that included 20 buildings. It included lampposts, fences and anything else needed to enhance an impression of reality. An article including pictures was ran in the local newspaper in 1995 featuring her village. One of her greatest pleasures in life was teaching the younger generation her talents. She recently experienced her father being inducted into the Fireman's Hall of Fame in Coralville, Iowa.
Eunice graduated from the Anita High School in 1933. In 1934, she met her future husband, Lawrence H. Dreyer, and they married at Spirit Lake, Iowa, on May 16, 1936, exactly 20 years after the wedding date of her eldest brother, Robert. On February 17, 1937, they had their only child, Donald Jerome Dreyer. Larry can be remembered as being associated with the motion picture theater in Atlantic from 1936-1962 and Eunice as concession manager for six seasons at the drive-in theater. Starting at the age of 12, Donald worked for six years at the drive-in theater. Eunice and Larry were always together; "Side by Side," was their song. They shared several interests, but mainly fishing, including several trips to Minnesota and Northern Iowa. In 1962, they moved from Atlantic to the Stanton, Iowa, area, purchasing a small house located within walking distance to Viking Lake; where they spent a lot of time boating and fishing. In 1965, they relocated, buying an acreage south of Shenandoah, Iowa at Northboro which was located on the Iowa side of the Iowa-Missouri border. They raised and sold fruits and vegetables, and enjoyed the wildlife. In 1973 they moved back to Atlantic where they lived for 26 years. Larry passed away in 1988, and Eunice continued living in Atlantic until 1999, when she moved to Winterset to be near her son. After moving to Winterset she was able to stay in her own home to celebrate her 100th Birthday.
Eunice is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Don and Judy of Winterset; and six generations of nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Peter and Nellie Scott Sr.; husband, Lawrence; six brothers, Robert, Peter Jr., Clifton, Felix, Rueben and Wendell; four sisters, Inez Buckley, Zeta McAfee, Nellie Morris and Evelyn Lawless; a brother and sister in infancy; uncle, Johnnie Scott (who lived with the Scott family); and daughter-in-law, Margaret M. Dreyer.
She had lots of friends and many relatives, she is the last of the original Scott family and the last grandchild of her maternal grandparents, Robert C. Demming and his wife, Betsy Jane.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m., Friday, April 24, 2015 at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic. Interment will be in the Atlantic Cemetery. A time of fellowship will be held at Roland's' following the burial.
