Betty Jean Davenport, daughter of Floyd Mike Webb and Eva (Sink) Webb was born April 18, 1930 near Pitzer in Madison County, Iowa and passed from this life Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa at 84 years of age.
Jean received her education in Lewis School in Osceola and in 1944 her family moved to Woodburn where she finished school and graduated in 1948. She learned to sing with her sisters and entered many amateur contests when they were young. She taught Sunday School as a girl and sang in church programs. Following graduation she worked for Miller and Garris at Banta Abstract Company. She quit prior to being united in marriage to Cecil Leroy Davenport on May 28, 1950 at Woodburn, Iowa. Jean went to work for Harold McNeal as Deputy Recorder until 1955 when her daughter, Cheryl was born. They lived in Woodburn until moving to Osceola in December of 1956. She was invited to the Osceola United Methodist Church the first Sunday they lived in Osceola and she has been a member ever since and has sung in the church choir since 1969.
Jean was one of the first women hired by Furnas Electric and worked there for 21 years with the last 19 as an inspector, retiring in 1995. She began working part time at the Osceola Public Library shortly after retiring from Furnas and was still working right up until her death.
Jean was a very active volunteer, she was Home Room mother, involved with Girl Scouts, Vacation Bible School, Sunday School, helped with the school reading program and held various offices of UMW. She was active with the American Legion Auxiliary, worked with the Iowa Heart Association, chaired UMW dinners, and the Clarke County Genealogy Group.
Those relatives who preceded Jean in death were her parents, Floyd and Eva Webb, husband Cecil Davenport and sisters, Bonnie Lou Webb and Loretta Bay.
Jean leaves to cherish her memory; daughter, Cheryl Zach and her husband Marvin of Urbandale, Iowa; grandsons, Nick Spicer and his wife Megan of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Aaron Spicer of Urbandale, Iowa; great grandson, Harrison David Spicer of Urbandale, Iowa; sisters, Barbara Ochanpaugh and Bernita Webb both of Des Moines, Iowa as well as many nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
In lieu of flowers, her family requests that memorials be directed to Osceola United Methodist Church Choir or The Osceola Public Library.
