Howard South, 92, of Winterset, formerly of Afton, died peacefully Easter Sunday, April 5, 2015 at Winterset Care Center South.
Celebration of Life Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 9, 2015 at Powers Funeral Home in Afton. Pastor Joel Sutton will officiate. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. Thursday until service time, at Powers Funeral Home in Afton.
Howard Isaac South, son of Hubert South and Edith Clara Holshuk, was born on January 14, 1923 in Elliott, IA,. The family moved to a farm near Carl where he attended country school. Later they moved to the Shannon city area. Howard graduated from the Shannon City High School in 1940. He was active in sports.
Howard and Merle Ellison, daughter of Park Meredith Ellison and Grace Leona Thompson, were united in marriage June 17, 1947 in Creston. Two sons, Steven Meredith and Phillip Linn blessed their home. They were members of the Arispe Methodist Church.
Howard was a farmer who believed in Conservation and saw many changes during his years of farming. He loved tilling the soil and caring for the baby animals.
In 1986 they purchased their retirement home in Afton and in 2012 they moved to Madison Square Assisted Living in Winterset, IA. Howard entered the Care Center on December 31, 2014.
He was active in Farm Bureau, a township trustee, served on church boards and served on the Grant Township School Board. He enjoyed traveling, fishing and playing cards.
Howard's survivors are his wife Merle South of Winterset; sons Steven M. (wife Barbara) South of West Des Moines; Phillip L. (wife Nancy) South of Ogden, IA.; grandchildren Meredith South and Matthew South of West Des Moines; his sister Dorothy White and her children Jeffrey White of Norwalk and Virginia (husband Bob) Bresette of Gretna, Neb.; sister-in-law Marjorie Adkisson of Normal, Ill. and brother-in-law Cecil Ellison of Nolanville, TX.
He was preceded in death by his parents and parents-in-law
