John L. Allen

John Lewis Allen was born near Elm Grove church in Madison county, Iowa, March 6, 1865 and died at his home near the same place, June 7, 1916, at the age of 51 years, 3 months and one day.

He grew up and spent his entire life in the community in which he was born. He was united in marriage to Anna Belle Foster on March 5, 1890. To this union six children were born, all of them surviving him, except Loren Davenport, who died when about six months old. The other children are: Laura Belle Davis, who lives on a farm adjoining the farm of her father; Velma Beulah, Ivan J., Opal Nell and Charlotte May, all of whom live at home with the parents.

He was converted in his youth and united with the Elm Grove Methodist church, of which he has ever since been a faithful member. He was one of the most successful farmer of the community, and was considered a friend of everybody in the community. A short time before his death, he was building a barn a few miles north of his farm, and while thus engaged, he received a wound from a nail in one of his feet, which caused him a great deal of suffering, and although everything was done that could be done—by medical skill and kind, loving hands, his friends were compelled to bid him goodbye.

He was a devoted husband, an affectionate parent, a beloved brother, a sincere Christian and a good neighbor. He leaves to mourn his loss, a wife, one son, four daughters, two brothers, one sister, two grand children and a large number of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at the Elm Grove M. E church, June 9th at 11 o’clock, conducted by a former pastor, Rev. C. K. Corkill of Melcher, after which he was laid to rest in the Sayre cemetery.
