March 1908For several weeks our readers have been aware of the serious illness of Ross Smith and a brief notice of his death, which occurred about the time we went to press, was published last week.
His full name was Roscoe C. Smith and he was born near the Ohio postoffice in this county March 18, 1880. The following year his father moved to Truro and erected the first business house in that new town.
When Ross became old enough he took a place in his father's store, where he showed great efficiency and tact. On being elected county treasurer, the father removed to Winterset in 1901 and left the business in care of Ross, which he managed with ability and success for about two years, when it was disposed of and Ross came to Winterset to manage the business which his father bought of Chas. Eastman. He was very attentive to the business and also assisted in closing out the Croson grocery which they acquired from the parties who came into possession of that stock. A short time ago he severed that connection with his father's store to take the management of Mrs. Holme's, whose daughter Ella he had married the previous year. However, before he entered upon his new business connection he failed in health and after several weeks, during which he made a manly fight to overcome the disease, he was confined to his bed where he suffered for four weeks and died as before stated March 5, 1908 about 5 o'clock in the evening. His disease was pronounced by the physicians pleuro pneumonia.
The funeral occurred last Saturday forenoon at the Baptist church conducted by Rev. Mr. Atwood and assisted by Rev. Mr. ReQua. He was buried at the Winterset cemetery. Among the immediate relatives left to mourn his loss are his father and mother, four brothers, three sisters, wife and infant son.
