March 1908Lewis Crawford was born March 16, 1821, near Leesville, Lawrence County, Ind. Died March 19, 1908, at his old home near Earlham, Ia., being 87 years and 3 days old.
He wass married to Elizabeth Weaver near Belford, Indiana, October 4, 1849. To this union were born five children, all of whom are living. He moved to Madison county, Iowa, near Winterset in 1853 on what is now known as the old Sumner place; from whence they removed to the old home. His wife died June 26, 1864. He was among the earliest settlers of the county and had much to do with the surveying and naming of the townships of the county.
He was a veteran of the Mexican War, being a private of Co. F Regiment, Ind. Volunteers and served to the close of the war.
His form was laid to rest beside his wife in the (Primitive) Baptist cemetery north of Winterset. Was followed to his last resting place by a large concourse of friends and neighbors.
He was a kind neighbor, a loving husband and father, and a true friend to those who were in trouble. Was a Primitive Baptist in religious belief and was an old time Democrat, having cast his first vote for James K. Polk.

He is survived by five children, Mrs. Agnes Terry, Jacob W. of Stillwater, Okla., Mrs. Mary Preble of Belgrade, Nebr., Mrs. Callie Rippey, Winterset and D. V. Crawford of Earlham. He was a kind husband and father and a true friend to the needy.
The funeral was held Saturday at the Baptist church north of town conducted by Rev. Young of Milo.

Uncle Lew Crawford, of Madison township died at his home this morning after a long illness. Mr. Crawford was eighty-seven years of age. He was one of the oldest settlers of the county and generally known. He was a man of sterling integrity and reliability of character. He was respected wherever known and had many warm, personal friends.
