Winterset Madisonian, Winterset, Iowa
February 1927

John Marshall Carter, son of Peter and Parthenia Blair Carter, was born in Kentucky, February 4, 1843. In 1860, with his parents, brothers and sisters, together with eight other families, he left Kentucky. He drove a team of oxen on this trip, which took many weary weeks of traveling. Finally, they reached Madison county, where they located. Here, he began the task of helping to make a home in a new country with all its difficulties.

In 1864, he enlisted in Co. C, 48th Iowa Regiment, serving several months in the Union army.

On September 16, 1866, he was married to Adeline Smothers, of Illinois. They came to Iowa, where they made their home near St. Charles, until August 22, 1921, when she was called to her reward. Several children were born to them, two of whom died in infancy; Alonzo died in 1891, at the age of 21. He leaves four children - P. A. Carter and Mrs. Emma Conard, of St. Charles, Mrs. Estella Jones, of Winterset, and Oscar Carter of Manley, Iowa; seven grand-children and nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, James of St. Charles, Ia., and Robert of Milo, Mo.; two sisters, Mrs. Eliza Haynes of Lathrop, Mo., and Mrs. Lusarah Breeding, of St. Charles, besides many other relatives and friends.

He was a member of the United Brethren church at Blair Chapel for many years.

After the death of his wife, he resided with his children. He had been in failing health for some time, but was confined to his bed but a few days. He passed to the beyond, February 7, 1927, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Conard. He had reached the age of 84 years and 3 days.

Funeral services were conducted at Blair Chapel by the Rev. A. E. George, of Mitchellville, after which he was laid to rest beside his wife, to await the resurrection.
