T.G. HARMON DIES IN WESTERN HOME

Helped Dig Famous Backbone Tunnel In County's State Park.

Tilmon G. Harmon, one of the Harmon boys who helped his father, John Harmon, dig the tunnel through the Backbone many years ago, is dead. The unique tunnel, the mill race, the old mill at the east end of the tunnel on the banks of Middle River, were for many years one of the most interesting sights in Madison county. Today, the tunnel, all that is left of the original project, is incorporated in Pammel state park. Years ago it was necessary to crawl through part of the tunnel on one's hands and knees. Today, the tunnel is cemented and a drive leads from one end to the other.

The account of Mr. Harmon's death is taken from the Grants Pass, Oregon, Courier, and was sent to The News by his son with whom he made his home.

"Leaving only seven members of the local G. A. R. post, Tilmon Gibbs Harmon, 91, resident of Josephine county since 1876, died at the home of his son, C. E. Harmon at 8 o'clock Monday morning. Mr, Harmon had been in poor health for the past several months, being critically ill since the first of the year. His birthday was January 9 and at that time it was expected that he would live only a few days, but his condition improved, recently changing for the worse.

Born in Knoxvilie, Tennessee, on January 9, 1842, Mr. Harmon was married in Iowa, and moved to Oregon to the Willamette valley where he engaged in ranching for a few years before coming to the Selma country in Josephine county. He took up a homestead on Deer Creek in 1876 and still owned it at the time of his death. Mr. and Mrs. Harmon celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary about eight years ago on their homestead. Mrs. Harmon died in November, 1926. After her death Mr. Harmon moved to Grants Pass where he lived with his son, C. E. Harmon. He had been a member of the local G. A. R. post for the past thirty years."
