A. B. HEATON DIES AT GREENFIELD MAR. 21

Former Winterset Man Moved To Adair County About Twenty Years Ago.

A. B. Heaton, 80, a resident of Greenfield for many years, former Winterset man, was found dead in his bed, Tuesday morning, March 21 at 5:30 o'clock by Jim Caviness, who had been making his home with him. Mr. Heaton had been ill for some time and had recently returned home from the University hospital at Iowa City, where he was receiving treatment.

Funeral services were held March 23 at the Heaton home. Burial was In the Greenfield cemetery.

Relatives called to Greenfield by his death were J. H. Heaton of Laurel, Nebraska; Mrs. Mary Heaton and son Ralph of Sioux City; Mrs. Lettie Sexsmlth, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Davidson of O'Neill, Nebraska.

Abner Heaton moved away from Winterset to Greenfield about, twenty years ago. He came to Winterset from Lee township where he was a prosperous farmer. His father, William Heaton, was one of the first men in Lee township and was a man of some, wealth.

He came from Pennsylvania and in 1858 laid out a town on a section of land, about the best in Lee township, and proposed to build a seminary to cost not less than $100,000. He gave a $50,000 bond for faithful performance and sold some lots at $50 to $300. The bond was recorded in the records of Madison county. That summer a town site meeting was held, where the town was to be built. B. F. Roberts, the man who built the old stone house on No. 2 a mile west of Winterset, was the principal speaker. For some reason the project was dropped.
