Earlham Echo – Earlham, Iowa
March 11, 1926

Atha N., son of Joseph and Catherine Mendenhall Barnett, was born near Ackworth, Warren County, Iowa, August 19, 1859, and came to the close of his earthly life in the late afternoon of March 6, 1926, at Earlham, Iowa aged 66 years, 6 months and 16 days.

Atha was a birthright member of the Society of Friends, never removing his membership from the Conservative Meeting near his birthplace. He was one of a family of five children, two boys and three girls, and is the second one of this family to depart from this life, a sister, Mrs. Cynthia Trucks, having died some 17 years since.

Mr. Barnett came to Earlham about 29 years ago and has made his home in this community ever since. He was united in marriage to Miss Lizzie Wilson at Earlham March 22, 1900, who has been to him a faithful companion and helpmate in the truest and fullest sense and who has tenderly ministered to him during all these years and especially during the past months when disabled by disease he has been unable to care for himself.

While Mr. and Mrs. Barnett have never had any children of their own they have given of themselves in the parental care to their niece and nephew, Mrs. Flossie Cox and Charles Trucks whose parents were taken away early in life and to little Louise Cox since the death of her mother some years ago. This has been an entirely unselfish service, devoted of reward as regards outward appearance but rich in the joy that comes from such service.

Mr. Barnett leaves to mourn their loss, his faithful companion and wife, a brother Aaron, of Whittier, Calif., two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Heffley, of Ackworth, Iowa who has helped to care for him in his last illness, and Miss Lydia M. Barnett also of Ackworth, a nephew Charles trucks, of St. Joe, Mo., to whom he gave a father’s care, and a great-niece, Louise Cox, whose sunny smile has helped to brighten his last hours.

Funeral services were conducted at the Friends Church at Earlham by the pastor S. H. Williams on Monday afternoon March 8, and the remains laid to rest in Earlham Cemetery.
