Earlham Echo – Earlham, Iowa
October 30, 1925Lydia Merrill, daughter of Amos and Mary Merrill was born in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Sept. 19, 1843, and died Oct. 28, 1925 at the age of 82 years, 1 month and 9 days.
She was married in Collins County, Texas, to Commador Perry Nuckolls April 1, 1863. After the Civil War, Mr. and Mrs. Nuckolls spent a year in Illinois, later moving to Iowa and living in Jones County, Missouri Valley, St. Charles and Winterset. In November of the year 1898 they moved to Earlham where they have spent the remainder of their lives, Mr. Nuckolls having left this world in April 1923, three years preceding his wife.
Mrs. Nuckolls in the 27 years she spent in Earlham has lived a true Christian life and has gained throughout the years many kind and loving friends. She joined the Baptist Church 39 years ago in Jones County and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church in Earlham in 1914. She loved her Bible and read it as long as she could see to do so.
She leaves to mourn her death two sons, J. L. Nuckolls, of Earlham, and T. A. Nuckolls, of Des Moines, and four daughters, Mrs. E. M. Sargent, of Colorado, Mrs. Kate Price, of Missouri, Mrs. Zola Price of Des Moines and Mrs. C. A. Musselman, of Earlham; 27 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren also survive.
Sister Nuckolls has been feeble and ailing for many months, yet she has been a patient sufferer and has been cared for with all the loving attention that her blind son and grandson and daughters could give her. She manifested that same patience and faithfulness in her care for her husband during his nine years of illness.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church on Friday afternoon, conducted by her pastor Rev. Eben A. Thomas. Interment was in Earlham Cemetery.
