Melissa Agnes, daughter of Thomas and Rachel Shipman, was born near Kempville, Canada, on Jan. 29, 1850. When 5 years of age her parents moved to Illinois, near Rockford. Two years later they again moved to Keokuk County, Ia. where she resided with her parents until her marriage July 29, 1869 to S. W. Henkle of the same county. In the spring of 1874 these young people came to Madison County, Iowa, which has been their continuous residence over on-half century, excepting the few years spent at Dexter.

She was converted in a series of meeting at Fairview in the winter of 1898. Her daily life was that of a loving wife and earnest Christian mother. She leaves to mourn her going two sisters, Mrs. Susan Faucett of Fair Grove, Mo., and Mrs. Ida Harper of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. She also leaves her aged companion who has gone with her through 56 years of married life. There are also three sons and three daughters who mourn the departure of their mother: Burt of Paonia, Colo., Geo. of Montrose, Colo., S. W. Jr., of Earlham, Mrs. C. R. Fritz of Menlo, Mrs. T. H. Laidley of Des Moines and Mrs. Arthur Herrell of Omaha. There are also seventeen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. On the evening of the 29th of April, as night came on and she quietly and peacefully went to sleep at the age of seventy-five years and three months.

A short service was held at the home on May 1 and later at the M. E. Church in Earlham, conducted by her pastor, Rev. McKay assisted by Rev. Thomas and Rev. Hulbert of Worthington. Interment was in Earlham Cemetery.
