Death Summons Young Mother

Mrs. J. W. Wright, Former Earlham Girl, Succumbs to Brief Attack of Intestinal Flu, Leaving Husband and Three Young Children to Mourn Loss.

Again death has invaded the home, very near although not of this community, taking away she who was its heart and foundation and leaving only memories and well-night broken hearts. Thirty years ago last April came into the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Carey the baby daughter whom they called Beth Lorene. Through the years of childhood she came to the esteem of a beautiful young womanhood the high tide of this life she arrived at the end of her school career at Earlham in the class of 1913 and two years later in the season of the flowers she entrusted her life to the keeping of John W. Wright. In such environment her lovely youth bloomed into womanhood and in the course of time the union was enriched by the coming of three splendid boys. Then came disease, sudden and insidious, death, “and after that the dark.”

How she loved her home, this devoted young mother, how she should have loved to walk through life with her sons, leaving the impress of her Mother soul on their lives. Hopes and dreams unfulfilled, sacrifices ended, tasks undone, heart broken; that is death, the inexplicable. When it brings to an end a life so valuable as that of Lorene Wright we wonder if it is a kind and wise Divinity that can be so ruthless.

The illness which brought this life to so untimely an end, lasted but little over a week. Mrs. Wright was first afflicted with a mysterious intestinal complaint, diagnosed as appendicitis, and was operated upon last Wednesday. A large pus development was discovered and drainage established, but the patient failed to improve. Tuesday the toxin which seemed to have invaded her entire system spread to the glands of the neck, and an immediate operation was advised, but failed of its effect. The patient sank rapidly and shortly after noon her brave spirit took its flight into the unknown. A post mortem examination indicated that the elusive malady intestinal influenza was probably the cause of the swift and deadly attack.

Funeral services were held at the Highland Park Presbyterian Church at two o’clock this afternoon, being conducted by the pastor. Interment was in Glendale Cemetery. The following biography was read:
