Carroll D. Reinert, 90, of Wesley Towers, died Nov. 20, 2014, at Hester Care Center, Hutchinson. He fought four types of cancer since 2004. This occurred from being exposed to the radiation from the atomic bombs dropped on Japan in Aug. of 1945. He was born on April 21, 1924, in DeSoto, Iowa, the son of Leo M. and Hazel Mullins Reinert.

He graduated from high school Earlham, Iowa in 1941. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he made long range patrols behind enemy lines as a member of a reconnaissance troop. Among his medals, he was awarded three battle stars, Philippine Presidential Unit Citation Badge, a Bronze Arrowhead for a “D” Day landing on the Philippines, a beachhead on Bougainville in the Solomon Islands, and was a Master Sergeant. He also was with the first military personnel to land on Japan in Sept. of 1945, as part of the occupation forces. He was a graduate of the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa. While he was in graduate school he was offered a position at a company now known as Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. After working there for almost six and one half years he accepted a position with Cessna Aircraft Company in Wichita, Kan. in 1956. In 1960, he was transferred to Hutchinson to be the Director of Finance/Controller of the Cessna Fluid Power Group, a position he held until he retired in 1989. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He was a charter member of the Hutchinson Accounting Association, a member of the Institute of Management Accountants, and a member of the Americal Division Veterans Association. He had been Chairman of the Hutchinson Hospital Corporation, presently known as Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, past President of Central Kansas Manufacturers Association, and Chairman of the United Way Admissions Committee. He had served on the following boards: Rotary Club (Paul Harris Fellow), Chamber of Commerce, Red Cross, Health “E” Quip, YMCA, Hutchinson Accounting Association, SCORE, Advisor to Office Education Hutchinson High School, Space Works of the Kansas Cosmosphere and the former Grace Hospital. He was on a committee responsible for combining the two hospitals in Hutchinson in the 1970’s.

On Aug. 24 1947, he married Betty L. Miller at Redfield, Iowa. She survives. Other survivors include: two daughters and sons-in-law, Patty and David Bass of Hutchinson, Ellen and Roger Shook of Lakewood, Colo.; and three grandchildren, Travis Shook, Courtney Shook and Jeremy Bass. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, 2014, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Reverend Jim Rhaesa presiding. Private family burial will be in Earlham Cemetery, Earlham, Iowa. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Trinity United Methodist Church or to the Hazel Collier Scholarship Fund at Wesley Towers, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501
