Mexican is Accidentally Killed

Sestesne Ruiz, a young Mexican, aged 19, belonging to the Rock Island grading crew, was instantly killed Sunday at the Cement Quarry when a 38 Special revolver carried in the left-hand pocket of his overalls was discharged accidentally and sent its heavy bullet through his stomach. He was alone at the time, employed digging potatoes in the field of his friend Paul Rodriguez on the hill above the power house. It is supposed the handle of the mattock which he was using struck the hammer of the gun as it rested on the cartridge and exploded it. The report was heard by a young Mexican boy, who also saw Ruiz fall. By the time some of the ----- reached his side he was dead and his clothes, ignited by the burning powder, had partly burned from his body. Death was probably instantaneous as he had not moved after falling. The shock of the heavy bullet at such close range would have been sufficient to cause death at once.

Ruiz’s funeral was held at the undertaking rooms Tuesday afternoon, the Mexican population attending in a body. A Catholic priest from Stuart conducted the service and the remains were interred in Earlham Cemetery. Ruiz had no known relatives in America. He was a pleasing looking young chap of good habits and industry, and the foreman of the grading crew rated him one of the most intelligent, orderly and likable men under his command.
