DOROTHY MAYE RAMBOW, Winterset, Iowa

Dorothy Maye Sankey was born Jan. 1, 1917, the fourth of five children born to Alvin Newton Sankey and Myrtle Rebecca Sankey, and she passed away Nov. 4, 2014. Her life has gone full circle from her birth in Lincoln Township to her final days near Pammel Park, within sight of the flashing beacon on a nearby communications tower that stands on the farm of her birth. After graduating from Winterset High School in 1934, she taught for a short time in one-room school houses in the area that included Tusha, then became a telephone operator at the Winterset Exchange.

She met Paul Arthur Rambow on a blind date when he was stationed at Ft. Des Moines with the 14th U.S. Cavalry. They were married secretly in 1941, as women could not teach or work for the telephone company if married. That marriage lasted 71 years, until Paul's death in 2012.

The 2nd World War began Dorothy's travels beyond, first to Indiana, then to Illinois, and finally to Ras Tanura, Saudia Arabia, where Paul was employed as a refinery operator with ARAMCO, the Arabian-American Oil Company.

Upon their return to the United States in 1960, the family settled at the present location near the park, and in later years Dorothy worked not only as a farm wife, but in Good's Bakery and for the Department of Social Services, where she delighted in trying to help others.

She is survived by a sister, Harriet McDonald (who will be 100 on Nov. 13); and her children, Paul, Phillip (Jan) and Gordon; three grandchildren, Amy (Lance) Larsen, Adam (Meredith) Rambow and Megan (David) Sims; and four great-grandchildren, Ashlyn, and Arianna Larsen, and Konrad and Jacob Sims. She lived long, she lived well, and her life touched many others.

She will be buried beside her husband in the Winterset Cemetery, with many other family and friends near to her. Graveside services are to be determined.
