Esther Josephine (Marxen) Butcher

Esther Butcher, 91 of Greenfield; formerly of rural Orient, died Friday, October 17, 2014 at the Greenfield Rehab & Healthcare Center in Greenfield.

Celebration of life services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at the Powers Funeral Home junction of highway 34 & 25 in Creston. Chaplain Kelly Gafkjen will officiate. Burial will be at Moon Cemetery, south of Macksburg.

Open visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, October 20, 2014, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Powers Funeral Home in Creston.

Esther Josephine (Marxen) Butcher, daughter of Claus Marxen and Lucille (Willms) Marxen, was born September 14, 1923 in Pottawattamie County. She was educated in Atlantic Schools.

On November 26, 1939, Esther married William Gerald Butcher in Davis City, Iowa. 
They settled and lived most of their life farming near Zion, east of Orient. Esther was a homemaker. William died in 1993. Esther moved to Creston for several years, before moving to Greenfield.

Survivors include her two sons, Robert (wife Pat) Butcher of Creston and Roy (wife Cindy) Butcher of Greenfield; five 
grandchildren, Tina (husband Dan) Breen of Fairfield, Rory (wife Martha) Butcher of Des Moines, Jodi (husband Sean) Silvernail of Claremont, Minn., Craig Butcher of Creston and Jeanne (friend Brian) Butcher of Greenfield; twelve great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents, her husband William, and brothers, Donald and Wilber Marxen.
