DEATH OF SANFORD HAXTON

Pioneer Resident Dies at Home in Orient Sunday Morning

Death claimed a grand old man of Orient Sunday morning at 1:30 o'clock when Sanford Haxton of that city passed away. He was 76 years of age.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Orient Methodist church. The Rev. Jones of Orient and H. T. Clampitt of Greenfield had charge of the services. Interment was made in the Orient cemetery.

Sanford M. G. Haxton was born in Fountain County, Indiana, Oct. 11, 1845, and died at his home in Orient, Iowa, May 4, 1924, aged 78 years, six months and 23 days.

Mr. Haxton enlisted in the Army of the United States, County (Company) H, 150th Regiment of Indiana, February 28, 1865, and was honorably discharged August 5th, 1865.

He came to Iowa and first settled in Madison County, 1868, and later moved to Adair County about 1872 and has lived in the town of Orient since 1879, 45 years.

He was united in marriage to Miss Girzell Gordon, April 4th, 1869. They were the parents of five children, 4 boys and 1 girl, Jane, Chas, James William, John, three of the children preceded their father by death in infancy.

In early life he was converted and united with the Christian church. Later when he moved to Orient united with the Methodist Church which he remained a faithful and devote member until God took him.

He leaves to mourn his going his faithful wife, one daughter, Mrs. Jane Henry of Orient, and one son, John Haxton, of Arlington, South Dakota, three grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren besides a host of friends and neighbors.
