Hunting Accident Is Fatal To Boy, 13

Mark Allen Lauer, 13, of Rural Irvington, Iowa, died Sunday evening, November 26, of shotgun wounds in his right side.

Chief Deputy Sheriff Paul Welch filed a report on Saturday, November 25, that a hunting accident had occurred at approximately 10 a.m. in Grand River township.

According to Welch's report Mark Lauer and his brother Paul Duane Lauer 16, were walking along a ditch when Paul discharged a shell into an old metal feeder and thought the shotgun was empty. After closing the action on the bolt action magazine fed 12 gauge shotgun, the shotgun discharged striking Mark in the right side.

Mark Allen Lauer was born in Creston, January 19, 1965. He was the son of D. Duane and Mary Lou Dimond Lauer. He had lived at Macksburg before moving to the Algona vicinity three years ago.

He is survived by his father, D. Duane Lauer of Macksburg;, his mother, Mary Lou Lauer of Irvington; two brothers, Paul Lauer of Macksburg and Guy Lauer of Irvington; two sisters, Kim Lauer of Macksburg and Melanie Erin of Irvington. Also surviving are his grandparents, Dale Lauer of Tucson, Ariz. Myrwin Dimond of Corwith and Marie Dimond of Algona and great grandmother, Mrs. Guy Dimond of Britt. He was preceded by his paternal grandmother.

He was in the eighth grade at St. Joseph's Catholic School at Bode and was a member of St. Cecelia's Catholic Church at Algona.
His funeral was held Wednesday afternoon, November 29, at St. Cecelia's Catholic Church at Algona. Msgr. William Bauer and Rev. Fr. Mark Duchene officiated. Burial was made at the Calvary Cemetery at Algona.

A Christian wake service was held Monday evening November 27 at the Coen Funeral Home in Creston. A parish rosary service was held Tuesday, November 28 at the Wilson Funeral Home in Algona.

A memorial fund has been established by his family.
