Pioneer Woman Crosses DivideMrs. Sarah Whited Died Tuesday, May 10, 1910, Aged 84 Years
One by one the early pioneers are joining the silent majority and now they are so few in number that they can be counted on one's fingers. Tuesday, May 10th, Mrs. Sarah Whited died at the home she had occupied for forty years, aged 84 years and 7 months. She had been gradually failing for a number of years and the end had been expected to happen any time.
Sarah Bishop was born in Virginia, October 14th, 1825, and was married to D.H. Whited in 1840. They lived to celebrate their golden wedding and then had 7 years extra when Mr. Whited died. They came to Little Lake Valley in 1869 and purchased what is now known as the Whited ranch. Mrs. Whited was the mother of 14 children, 9 of whom are still living. She also had 38 grand-children and 50 great-grand-children, a great many of whom are living in this valley.
She joined the Baptist church when 12 years of age and was a consistent and earnest member all her life. She was one of the organizers of the local Baptist church.
The funeral services were held at the residence Thursday afternoon and were conducted by Rev. W.C. Whitaker. The remains were laid away in the old Sawyer's cemetery beside her husband.
_______________________Transcriber's note: The Whiteds lived in Madison County for about 20 years, starting in 1849.
