Earlham Echo
Earlham, Iowa
June 1902

Anna J. Roberts, wife of John M. Roberts of Paonia, Delta county, Colorado received injuries in a most sad accident with a frightened team of horses on the evening of June 20th, which six days later proved fatal. She bore her sufferings, which were intense, with heroic fortitude.

The deceased was a daughter of David and Hannah Stanton, deceased, formerly of Earlham, Iowa where she was born June 5th, 1870. In 1887 she went with her sister and family, Mrs. Ed. Griffin, to Lincoln, Neb., where she remained six years, returning to Iowa in 1893. She joined her sister Mrs. E. M. Ballard, at Paonia, Colorado in 1895, where she was married to J. M. Roberts, October 15th, 1896.

By birthright, Mrs. Roberts was a member of the Friends church, but while in Lincoln she united with the M.E. church and became an active worker in the Epworth League. On returning to Iowa she again united with the church of her childhood, being active and helpful in Christian Endeavor work and other church work that came to her.

The funeral services at the M.E. Church in Paonia were conducted by Rev. Charles E. Lewis of the Friends Church June 27th, 1902. At the grave the beautiful and impressive funeral service of the M.E. Church was read by their pastor, E. N. Edgerton, and solemn was the laying to rest of one so universally beloved.

She was a devoted wife and mother and leaves a stricken husband, and three small children, two sisters here, and one brother Barclay Stanton, of Perry, Iowa, besides a host of friends who mourn her loss, and extend their heartfelt sympathy in this hour of sore bereavement. Cheerful and contented in the light of her own home she exemplified in the daily duties of life the graces of a noble christian character. Cut down in the prime and strength of life, we stand in awe before the Majesty of Heaven, when we attempt to reconcile to our human understanding the fitness of these things, bowing in reverent submission to the Devine decree, believing “He doeth all things well,” and that in our Father’s House they have need of thee. ------------Mrs. E. D. Grippin
