This community was shocked on Monday morning of last week by the announcement of the death of Benoni Hill. But few of his friends knew he was ill, except for his sprained ankle, and the announcement of his death was received much as a thunderbolt from a clear sky would have been. For a few days he had been bothered with neuralgic pains in his left side and shoulders but paid no attention to it until Monday morning when they became so severe that he sent for a physician who came and examined him and stepped into an adjoining room to prepare a hypodermic injection for him and while he was preparing it, Mr. Hill was attacked with an unusual severe pain, which evidently reached his heart, and he expired almost immediately. Thus passed to his reward, one of our best and most worthy citizens.

He was a man of few words, yet his deeds will long be remembered. His word was as good as a bond and no one ever questioned his integrity.

The funeral service was held in the Friends’ church on last Thursday morning, and was largely attended. Rev. John Striblin delivered the sermon. The interment was in Earlham cemetery.

Benoni Hill, son of Mathew and Fannie Hill was born in Randolph county, Indiana, the 15th day of May 1844, where he spent the younger years of his life upon his father’s farm. He enlisted in Company H, 84th Regiment Indiana Volunteer Inf., August 14, 1862 and was mustered out of service June 14, 1865.

He was married November 15, 1866 to Mazana Pickett, who survives him.

The family moved to Marshall county, Iowa, in 1867, remaining there one year, after which they settled in Madison county, where the remainder of the deceased’s life was spent. One son, Lester, survives him, a daughter Effie and a son Frank having gone before.

He was a member of the Friends church, and a faithful attendant upon divine service. He was converted in 1892 and has since that time enjoyed the blessedness of a life “hid with Christ.” Though a man of but few words, he was possessed of a kind and tender heart, and was a loving husband and father.

As a citizen he stood above reproach among his fellowmen and the quiet sober life that he has lived among us is worthy of emulation by all.

At the time of his demise July 23, he was aged 57 years, 2 months and 7 days.
