Thursday, June 25, 1908Miss Lottie Mae Schlarb, daughter of H. G. and Lena Schlarb, was born in Des Moines, May 18, 1886, and departed this life June 8, 1908 in Kimball, Neb., aged 22 years and 21 days. The cause of her sudden death was a complication of peritonitis and scarlet fever.
About ten o’clock Sunday evening, June 7th, Mr. Schlarb received a telegram which was the first intelligence of his daughter’s serious illness. Mr. Schlarb who was just recovering from a long siege of la grippe and pleurisy was not strong enough to go to the bedside of his daughter, Mrs. Schlarb though very much reduced in strength from long and continuous waiting upon Mr. Schlarb took the first train Monday morning for Kimball, Neb., but did not reach there until Tuesday morning. Miss Schlarb died at 4:30 p.m., June 8, and her remains were immediately brought here, arriving at 4 p.m. June 10. The burial immediately followed in Penn Center cemetery. The congregation that assembled was a worthy expression of the sympathy for the friends of the deceased as well as to the esteem in which Miss Schlarb was held by her acquaintances and associates.
May 17, 1904 Miss Schlarb graduated from the Earlham Academy. She taught three terms of school in No. 7 and one term in No. 2, Penn township. The success that crowned her efforts in the school room was also testified to by the satisfaction expressed by the patrons of the school.
In 1906 Miss Schlarb took a commercial course at the C.C.C. in Des Moines, and completed the course at the Central Business college at Kansas City, Mo.
The memorial services were held June 21 at three o’clock in the M.E. church at Earlham, the sermon being preached by the pastor. A large congregation was present and the floral offerings were many and choice: particularly the one presented by her class, a broken circle.
