Marie Crabbs, 91, of Winterset died Saturday, March 15, 2014, at the Madison County Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, March 20th, at the United Methodist Church in Winterset with burial to follow in the Winterset Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 19th at Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset. Memorial contributions may be made to Middle River Hospice or the Madison County Memorial Hospital.

Marie Welch was born November 27, 1922 in Scott Township to Frank and Nettie (Mills) Welch. She grew up in Scott Township and graduated from Winterset High School in 1941. Her marriage to Dallas Crabbs took place November 28, 1943.

Marie attended Simpson College, and was a teacher in Elm Grove and Scott Center rural schools. She taught for five years. She also worked for a time at the United Food Store in Winterset and was a waitress at the Club Café in Winterset. She worked for over twenty years at Hawkeye Security Insurance in Des Moines.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Winterset, as well as a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Class of ’41 Golden Girls.

Marie is survived by her daughters, Mary Ann (Garry) Orr of Winterset and Marilyn (Andy) McGaffin of Spencer. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Tawyne, Tasha, Teyona, and Chism Orr, and Stephanie and Mark McGaffin. She is further survived by fourteen great grandchildren: Tayia and Bryner Gibson; Tealey, Brent, and Blake Schwingendorf; Ellie, Taryn & Trigg Steenhoek; Josie and Jenna Orr; Jared and Jacob Knudson; Avery and Kellen McGaffin.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Dallas in 1980; and two brothers, Raymond and Hugh Welch.
