Earlham Echo
Earlham, Iowa
February 6, 1941Charles Drury Patterson was born July 14, 1854 at Liberty, Ind., and passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Roy Pearson near Earlham, Jan. 30, 1941, aged 76 years, 6 months and 16 days. He was the son of Alex and Lovina Patterson and the last one of his family to enter into rest eternal.
Sept. 4, 1883 he was united in marriage with Martha Danley. To this union were born 11 children. They are Bessie Bell of Dewey, Okla., Millie Pearson and Hazel DeVault of Earlham, Blanch Stoner, William, George, Weller Patterson and Helen DeRues Jr., all of Prairie City. Father Patterson was bereft of his companion on March 21, 1934. He bore his sorrow with great fortitude. At the age of seven years, his father, 2 brothers and 2 sisters contracted small pox and died within 11 days. One brother died in the army.
In 1871 Mr. Patterson and his mother came to Iowa and settled in Muscatine. Later they moved to Prairie City and with the exception of ten years in Adair county and 4 years in Dexter spent most of his life in and around Prairie City where he was held in the very highest esteem as a fine neighbor, friend and citizen. Many years ago he and his good wife united with the Methodist church at Mosher, and later were untied with the Christian church living an honest and upright life for many years. Mr. Patterson was ill for nearly 11 years, he bore his suffering without a murmur or complaint. He received the most kindly ministrations from his loved ones during his long illness. Too many kind things cannot be said concerning this fine old gentleman, he was a man among men. Besides his sorrowing sons and daughters, he leaves 18 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, with a host of friends who will miss this father, friend and neighbor.
Funeral services were held in the Christian church last Saturday at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. J. H. Freedline, pastor of the Methodist church at Dexter and Rev. MacDonald, pastor of the Christian church in Prairie City. A mixed quartette sang the hymns while Bonna Churchill presided at the piano. The pall bearers were C. E. Sheeler, Earl Ruggles, Henry DeWitt, Clarence Faidley and Kenneth Clark. Interment was in Waveland cemetery. The floral tributes bore ample witness of the high esteem in which the deceased was held.
