Billy Belew, 72, of Shannon City, passed away Sunday February 16, 2014 at his son's home in Afton. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, February 20, 2014, at Powers Funeral Home in Creston. Pastor Lila Green will officiate. Burial will be at Panther Creek Cemetery east of Redfield. Open visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at Powers Funeral Home in Creston, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Memorials are to be determined. Billy Wilford Belew was born on July 21, 1941 to Edward A. Belew and Opal I. (Bacon) Belew in Redfield, Iowa. Billy was one of seven children. Billy spent most of his younger years growing up on the family farm southeast of Redfield, on the "river bottom". On February 14, 1965 Billy was united in marriage to Claudia Daggett in Dexter, Iowa at the Methodist Church. To this union three children were born, Darwin, Theresa, and Vanessa. They later divorced in 1970. Billy then went on to marry Ruby Stonehocker on May 26, 1971 in Omaha, Nebraska. To this union four children were born, Brad, Denise, Elaine and Monica. They later divorced. Billy lived mostly in the Dallas County, Iowa area where he worked at the United Brick and Tile in Adel. In 1992 he moved to Creston to be closer to his children. He worked at Micheal Foods in Lenox, Iowa Select Farms and Woodmarc in Winterset before retiring in 2004. Billy enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and socializing with friends.
Billy is survived by a son, James Bradley "Brad" Stonehocker of Afton; five daughters, Denise Jones of Creston, Elaine (husband Sterling) Weirich of Corning, Iowa, Monica Belew of Creston, Vanessa (husband Wayne) Miller of Guthrie Center, and Theresa Jones of Eureka, Nev.; fiance', Helen Purscell of Shannon City; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; his buddy Chad "Chaddy" Neeley; his close family friend, David White, of Shannon City; a sister, Marjorie Alexander of Redfield; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Dean (wife Margaret) Belew, Donald Belew, Ronnie (wife Sherry) Belew, and Arnold (wife Pat) Belew; one sister, Loraine Potter; a son Darwin Belew in 1992; and second wife, Ruby Belew in 2008.
