The subject of this sketch was born in Greene county, Ohio, in 1828. In 1848 he was married to Ann Elizabeth Wroe. He came to Iowa in 1855 and settled in Madison township where he resided until the time of his death, which occurred Wednesday, October 18, 1905.

Martin Compton was one of the builders of this community and was proud of his handiwork. Never very robust in health he labored hard to hew out a home for himself and family in the then wilderness. At the call of his country he enlisted in the 39th Iowa infantry and served one year when he was discharged for disability.

Uncle Martin was of a retiring disposition, but his heart and purse were always open to every good cause and to the unfortunate and needy. His loss will be keenly felt in the community as well as in the family circle.

Mr. and Mrs. Compton reared a large family—eight boys, and they were all present at the time of his death. One daughter born to them, died in childhood.

The funeral was held from his late residence last Thursday afternoon and was largely attended.
