The funeral of Daniel Long, the Independence miner, who died from injuries received on Sunday, February 25, will take place at 1:30 o’clock this afternoon in the chapel of the Victor Undertaking company. The services will be conducted by the Rev. Mr. Bryan, pastor of the M.E. church. The remains will be sent on the afternoon train to DeSoto, Iowa, for interment, accompanied by John Long, a brother.---Victor, Colorado Record.

Deceased was born April 1, 1856, and died March 1, 1906, aged 40 years and 11 months. He had always lived the life of a pioneer, being the first white child born in Penn township, Madison county, Iowa. The family removed to ______ township, Dallas county, and Dan’s school days began at the McKibben school, the building being a log house. When he was 10 years old the Longs moved to DeSoto, the town being newly laid out, he and his brother going on the 4th of July to see the first train come into Van Meter. He grew to manhood at DeSoto. He visited Missouri and Kansas in his early days, returning home after an absence of three years. But the west called him again, he could not be satisfied here, so leaving his mother, father and family he went west and never returned. His life was that of the prospector, always looking and hoping for better luck next time, when he would come back to his mother and father and make them all rich. Such is the miner’s dreams wherever he is found. But Dan’s days were numbered, and his ---- had gone down. At morn Feb. 28, 1906, there was an accident at the mine and Dan was stricken down in the twinkling of an eye, receiving injuries that were fatal. He lived three days after the accident.

March 1st John Long received a telegram that his brother was badly hurt at Victor, Col., and as he started on his long journey he received word that he had died. (Unreadable ) friends that his life was honest and upright. At one time in his life he was a member of the Presbyterian church, so we must leave him with his God and trust that all is well with his soul.

Transcriber’s note: Typed as printed in the Earlham Echo. Burial was made in the Oakland cemetery, DeSoto, Iowa.
