Jim D. Hagen

Jim Dale Hagen, 73, of Weldon was born January 28, 1941 and passed from this life on January 31, 2014. He was born in Lamoni, Iowa, to Shelby Dale and Gretchen LaMae (Argabright) Hagen. Jim received his education at Winterset, Montour, Popcorn Country School, Weldon and Osceola High School, but he was self-educated in a variety of ways. After high school, Jim met the love of his life, Connie Elaine Lewis and married on September 14, 1962. To this union, three daughters were born; Candy, Kim and Christina.

Throughout his life, Jim enjoyed working on engines, car racing and traveling. He collected motor vehicles, belt buckles, hats and caps. Jim was an avid western book reader and also hunted and fished. He enjoyed “shooting the bull” with his buddies. Jim was quite a storyteller and enjoyed his grandchildren immensely. He retired as a self-employed mechanic. Jim was very proud of his business and thoroughly loved it. He was a hard worker and frugal. He burned wood for heat. Every fall and spring, Jim would drag his family to the “timber” for a hard day of wood-cutting.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Connie; daughters, Candy Melbie of Winterset and Kim (Dan) Kirkpatrick of New Virginia; grandchildren, Cassie Melbie and Austin Melbie of Winterset and Drew Kirkpatrick of New Virginia. He is also survived by his mother, Gretchen Hagen of Leon, brother, Jerry of Van Wert, sister, Sandy (Curt) Gracey of Norwalk, brother-in-law, Dennis (Carolyn) Lewis of Rayville, Missouri, nephews, Joe (Jennifer) Hagen, Jeff (Roz) Hagen, John (Becky) Lewis, and Ryan Gracey, and a host of other family, friends and racing buddies.

Jim was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Christina; father, Shelby; parents-in-law, John and Dora Lewis; and nephews, John Hagen and Camron Gracey.

MEMORIALS, directed to his family for a fitting tribute to be decided later.
