The town was shocked and bowed in sorrow on Saturday morning to hear of the sudden death of Mrs. Mazana Hill, who died suddenly Friday night. On Friday noon, Mrs. Hill’s grandson, Howard, took dinner with her and after school, went back to her home, finding her on the floor, unconscious. Help was at once procured and kind and loving hands did all that skill and tenderness could do, but at ten o’clock the spirit of this dear, beloved woman departed to be with those who had gone on before, and enjoy the reward of a faithful servant.
Mrs. Hill was 77 years old and has made Earlham and vicinity her home for many years, as she with her husband, Benoni, were early pioneers here. Her husband, two children preceding her to the great beyond, but one son, Lester with his family, remains to mourn the loss of a greatly beloved mother and grandmother.
Mazana Hill was a lifelong member of the Friends church, always faithful in attendance at the regular services and always ready to give of her substance to those in need or for the spread of the gospel. The church membership as well as her friends and neighbors, join with her loved ones in their sorrow for the departed. She had spoken of a desire, when death should come, that it be suddenly, and her desire has been granted. Her life has been one that proves to those left behind that she is now rejoicing with the blood-washed throng around the throne.

Thursday, December 14, 1922Mazana Hill, one of four children in the home of John B. Pickett and wife was born July 3rd, 1845 in Randolph County, Indiana. Here her early life was spent.
On November 15th, 1866 she was married to Benoni Hill. They set up the new home in the neighborhood where her childhood had been spent, but in 1867 they moved to Marshall County, Iowa and the year following to Madison county, Iowa in which place Mazana Hill continued to live until the time of her death.
Of the three children born into this home but one, Lester Hill survive her. The one daughter Effie and the son Frank and the husband preceded her in death.
Mazana Hill was a birthright member of the Friends Church, and in 1892 she with her husband was converted and united with the Earlham Friends Church and through the remaining years of her life she has been a faithful and loyal member of this church. Her life always reflected the love and spirit of her Christ. She has rejoiced in a Savior’s love. Her testimony was always a witness to this and her face bespoke the same. Hers was a Christian face beaming with love. It was strong, calm and peaceful.
She loved her church and was faithful in her attendance at the services. Her work was not so much of a public character however, but her chief love and interest centered in her home and its duties, and the one son Lester and his wife and four children. She was an ideal mother and homekeeper. And no one had more or lovelier flowers than Mazana Hill. Her yard was a spot of beauty from early spring until the frost of autumn.
She lived beyond the time allowed to man that of three score years and ten, but of her we love to ----------------------.
Life came to a close for Mazana Hill at the age of 77 years and 7 months on December 7th, 1922 at Earlham, Iowa.
She leaves two brothers, Henry and William Pickett, both of Indiana, one son Lester Hill and his wife and four children and a host of relatives and friends to miss her radiant face and cheery word. But the influence of her quiet walk with her Lord, the inspiration of her triumphant faith in God will be as a beacon light, lighting the way from earth to glory.
Funeral services were held from the Friends Church, Monday at 2 p.m. with Rev. John Nelson, in charge assisted by Mrs. Lescault. Burial in Earlham cemetery.
