Death of Mrs. Matilda Powell

Mrs. Matilda Powell died on August 30th, at the home of her son A. F. Powell in Scott township. She was 89 years of age and had a heart ailment that was the immediate cause of her death.

She was married to Charles M. Powell in 1867 and five of their seven children survive their mother. The four sons are: A. F. and A. A. Powell of Winterset; T. C. Powell of Creston and Fe. E. Powell of Des Moines; the one daughter is Mrs. Nettie Burkheimer of Wym, Ark. Thirty-one grandchildren and several great grandchildren also survive her.

Funeral services were held this morning at Union Chapel, conducted by Rev. E. A. Kennedy of Cedar Rapids. Interment took place in the church cemetery.

Betsey Matilda Bradigan was born in Ohio, Dec. 26, 1843 and died at her home in Scott township, Madison county, Iowa on Aug. 30, 1922, aged 79 years, 9 months and 4 days. She was married in October, 1867 to Charles M. Powell, who departed this life in 1890. To this union were born seven children, five of whom are still living: T. C. Powell of Creston, A. F. Powell of Winterset, Nettie Burkheimer of Wye, Ark., Franklin E. Powell of Des Moines, and Albert A. Powell of Winterset. Thirty-one grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren also survive.

She came to Iowa in 1875, having lived here ever since. When 17 years of age, she united with a church in Ohio, and in 1877 became affiliated with the U.B. church. She was an earnest Sunday school worker and of late years has been associated with the International Bible Association and Watch Tower society, spending much of her time in studying the Bible and writing. For several years she has been troubled with a heart ailment and in January last became afflicted with rheumatism and has been a sufferer since.

Funeral services were held at Union Chapel, conducted by Rev. E. A. Kennedy of Cedar Rapids, with interment in the church cemetery.
