Mortuary

Mary Gertrude Smith was born June 9, 1875, in Madison county, Iowa and departed this life at the Iowa Lutheran hospital in Des Moines, Oct. 23, 1922. She was the second daughter of James W. and Isabelle C. Smith. Her early life was spent in and near Truro.

She was converted at the age of 15 and united with the Methodist church at Truro. She was joined in marriage to Elmer C. Zimmerman of Peru, March 22, 1900. To this union, one child, Harry W., was born. She was a faithful worker in the church and all social activities in the community, being a charter member of the Woman’s Relief Corps and served as president for three years.

During this period and through her efforts, a monument was erected in the Peru cemetery to all soldier dead. She was a kind and devoted wife and mother. Many of her pleasing characteristics will long be remembered by her relatives and friends, her home being always open to gatherings. Her loving disposition and hospitable nature endeared “Gertie,” as she was known, to the entire community.

The funeral was conducted at the M.E. church in Peru, by her pastor, Rev. L. B. Shannon, together with the impressive W.R.C. ceremony; and was attended by a large gathering of friends to pay their last respects. She was laid to rest in the beautiful Peru cemetery.

She leaves to mourn her loss a devoted husband and son, mother, two sisters: Mrs. Walter Shearer and Mrs. Clyde Wilkinson; four brothers: Sam, Fred, Frank and Richard.
