Mathew Patterson Rippey, son of Mathew and Sarah Rippey, was born near Salem, New Jersey, Nov. 13, 1833 and passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James McKibban in Lincoln township, Madison county, Iowa, Oct. 19, 1922 at the age of 88 years, 11 months, 4 days.
His boyhood days were spent in Salem county, New Jersey. His desire to follow the medical profession led him to take a full course in Jefferson college of Philadelphia, Pa., and to further prepare himself for his chosen profession, he entered medical schools in St. Louis and Chicago. He settled in Keithsburg, Ill., where he practiced medicine for awhile.
He was married to Isabella Louden of Keithsburg, Aug. 16, 1853. To this union were born three sons and three daughters, three dying in infancy, and John in 1905. Mrs. Sarah McKibban of Winterset; James Louden Rippey of Audubon, and 11 grandchildren, three great grandchildren and two brothers: Thomas of Keithsburg, Ill., and John of Coon Rapids, Ill. survive him. Mrs. Rippey passed away May 7, 1919.
From Illinois, they moved to Springfield, Mo., where Mr. Rippey engaged in the drug business for several years. He came to Madison county in 1875, where he began the active practice of his profession. To be a practicing physician in a rural community in this early day, required great courage and many hardships and small remuneration, compared with the physicians of today. To call Dr. Rippey to your home for medical service meant that no matter what the roads and weather were, he would be there. His diagnosis of the case and his medicines ----- he relied upon and he was called many times in consultation with eminent physicians of the day.
Though he never affiliated with any church organization, he was always found trying to uphold the Christian standard of living and was a strong believer in the Presbyterian faith. Many men and women of the neighborhood will long cherish the memory of Dr. Rippey.
