SHIRLEY FREEMAN

Shirley Darlene Freeman, 74, died Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at Kavanagh House in Des Moines.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept.28, at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola with Rev. John Freeman officiating. Visitation will open on Friday with the family present to greet friends from 5-7 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home. Interment will be in the St. Charles Cemetery, St. Charles, Iowa. Memorial contributions may be directed to Friends of St. Charles Library in St. Charles, Iowa or Kavanagh House (Hospice of Central IA) 900 56th St. Des Moines, Iowa.

Shirley Darlene Freeman, daughter of George Gilbert Cooper and Mable Dorothy Faux Cooper was born Nov. 18, 1938, in Patterson, Iowa. Shirley graduated from the Patterson High School in 1956. She was united in marriage to William Howard Freeman on Aug. 2, 1958, in Greene County, Iowa and three children, Ronald William, Mark Wayne, and Kirk Allan blessed this union. Shirley worked many years for Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines as a PSA. She and Bill were members of various square dance clubs through the years, was a former girls softball coach and also worked with 4-H for over 30 years. She was a 23-year breast cancer survivor.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William Howard Freeman; brothers, Orville Cooper in infancy, Byron “Buck” Cooper, Robert F. Cooper; sisters, Velma Cooper in infancy, Josephine Couch, Pearl Kellogg Cronk and Daisy Maxon; grandson, Ryan William Freeman; and a niece and several nephews.

She is survived by her sons, Ron William (Brenda) Freeman of New Virginia, Mark Wayne (Mindy) Freeman of San Francisco, Calif., and Kirk Allan (Carol) Freeman of St. Charles; grandchildren, Matt (Shari) Nordhagen, Jennifer (Loren) Mott, Tiffany (Chris) Bucy, Austin Freeman, and Senator Keith Freeman; three great-grandchildren; her sisters, as well as other relatives and many friends.
