Page 1Death of Mrs. Rebecca Hyder
Mrs. Rebecca Cassiday Hyder died on April 24th, at her home in Winterset after several weeks of illness. She had been gaining after her siege of pneumonia, but was taken suddenly worse a week ago. Mrs. Hyder left Ohio with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Cassiday, the family living near Oskaloosa on a farm for a year. Then the move to Winterset was made in 1856; Mrs. Hyder’s residence here covering a period of 66 years. At the time of her death she had passed her 77th birthday.
Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2:30 in the Baptist church in charge of Rev. George D. Rogers.
One daughter, Edith survives Mrs. Hyder; one brother, W. W. Cassiday also of Winterset; also a niece and nephew, who have lived in the west for many years.
Mrs. Hyder’s death adds one more name to the long list of pioneers, whose lives have left a deep impression upon the history of Madison county. She had many traits that endeared her to her friends. Her devotion to her only daughter was notable and the sympathy of the community goes out to the bereaved daughter.

Rebecca E. Cassiday, daughter of W. P. Cassiday, was born near Reedsburg, Wayne county, Ohio, on March 4th, 1845. A the age of ten years she moved with her parents to Iowa, settling near Oskaloosa, remaining about one year and then moved westwards, settling in Winterset in the year 1856. She experienced many hardships of pioneer days, being an old settler of the county over 66 years.
She united with the Presbyterian church in early childhood and later wanted the Baptist church during Rev. Berry’s pastorate.
In the year 1870 she was united in marriage to Edward C. Hyder. To this union two daughters were born; Flora dying in infancy, the other, Edith, surviving her, who was here ministering to her with loving hands during her final illness.
She was the oldest daughter in a family of six children, four of these preceding in death, Marion Cassiday, the oldest brother and three sisters, Nancy, Katherine and Esther who died in childhood. Besides her daughter she is survived by one brother, W. W. Cassiday, of Winterset; two nieces, Helen Elwell, of Des Moines and Lillian Horned, of Portland, Oregon; also two nephews, Fred Wilbur Cassiday, of Portland, Oregon and Fred P. Cassiday, son of W. W. Cassiday.
She died on April 24, 1922 at the age of 77 years, 1 month and 20 days. She was a faithful mother and true Christian woman, living a quiet peaceful life of usefulness and administer always to others. Our loss is her gain and she has gone to a peaceful reward.
