Winterset’s business men were greatly shocked on Friday morning to hear that one of their associates, A. L. Stout, who had been at his post as assistant cashier of the Madison County State Bank, had died early that morning.

Mr. Stout had been at work as usual on Thursday, and in the evening had, in answer to a telephone message, assisted in the conferring of the third rank in Lotus Lodge, No. 48, Knights of Pythias. He went home, where he was seized with what was apparently an attack of acute indigestion. A doctor was called, and relief was soon given Mr. Stout. The physician, recalled in a short time, to attend him in a more severe attack, remained for over two hours, and as Mr. Stout felt much improved, and to all appearances was doing well, the doctor started home. He had hardly reached the door, when the suffering began again, lasting but a brief time, until death had come.

Mr. Stout had not been in good health for months, although he rarely complained. During the epidemic of influenza so prevalent two years ago, Mr. Stout had the disease, never regaining his full strength.

Abraham Lincoln Stout came to Winterset from Decatur county in 1867. His father, a civil war veteran, suffered much from broken health, incurred in service. The boy left school to assist in the support of the family, as one brother was an invalid and in later life, his mother was in poor health.

Without complaint, Mr. Stout assumed his heavy responsibilities and gave his life, one might say to real service for others.

He worked for three years in the Winterset flouring mill, and worked as a brakeman for the Rock Island, and fourteen years as clerk for T. L. Mullinix, in his grocery. In 1895, he became bookkeeper in the Madison County bank, and served there twenty-five years in efficient, faithful duty, being assistant cashier at the time of his death.

Civic affairs interested him and political matters found him active and earnest, his affiliation with the republican party being a strong factor in this work. He had also served twice as alderman and spent nine years on the Winterset school board.

Mr. Stout held many offices in his church, the Church of Christ, being superintendent of the Bible school, deacon, elder, trustee, teacher and treasurer.

He was also a Mason, being Master for three years and treasurer many years. As a Knight of Pythias, he had held many offices, being Master of Exchequer at the time of his death.

Everywhere Mr. Stout gave the highest and best quality of service, and his death has brought great sorrow to all who knew him in any capacity.

He leaves his wife and six sons: George, Robert, Albert, Charles, Edwin and Philip. To them, the deepest sympathy of the community is extended.

The funeral services were held at the Church of Christ Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Carpenter.
