Mrs. Martha Chandler Dead

Mrs. Martha Chandler died on Tuesday afternoon at one o’clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. B. D. Hemphill, of Dexter. Mrs. Chandler came to Winterset over a year ago to be with her sister, Miss Mary Cassidy, who was very ill. Mrs. Chandler developed a critical eye trouble, an operation was performed, but she has not been well since. A valvular heart trouble caused her death.

She was well known here, through years of residence in Winterset before and after her marriage to J. R. Chandler, one time our city mayor. His death occurred many years ago.

Mrs. Chandler was a teacher by profession, spending 11 years in schools for colored children. Besides Miss Cassidy, another sister Mrs. Margaret Jones, lives here; also two brothers, L. L. Cassidy of Des Moines and George Cassidy of Hubbard, Ore.

The remains are to be brought here for interment on Thursday afternoon, a brief service to be held at the home of Mrs. Jones at three o’clock.

MRS. CHANDLER DIES IN DEXTER

Former Winterset Teacher Dies Tuesday. Burial in Winterset Thursday.

Mrs. Mattie Chandler, sister of former librarian Mary Cassiday, and Mrs. Jeff Jones, died Tuesday in Dexter. Mrs. Chandler had been in feeble health for several years. The body will be brought to Winterset and short funeral services will be held at the home of Mrs. Jones on Thursday afternoon.

Mrs. Chandler came to Winterset with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Cassiday, in 1865, and grew to womanhood in the old family home where the county jail now stands. She conducted a private school for several years and taught in the Winterset schools until her marriage to Mr. Chandler who was a Winterset lawyer. Later they removed to Kellogg where Mrs. Chandler resided until after his death.

Mrs. Chandler was a cultured lady, a woman of refinement and was loved by all the Winterset people when she resided here.

She is survived by her sisters mentioned above and her brothers, George and Luther.

Martha Cassiday Chandler

Martha Cassiday was born January 25, 1850 in Zaenesville, Ohio. She was married on December 24, 1875 in Winterset, Iowa to Joseph R. Chandler, who died February6, 1889 in Des Moines. She died February 6, 1921 in Dexter, Iowa, aged 71 years and 13 days, just 32 years and 2 days after the death of her husband.

She taught primary in the schools of Winterset until her marriage and their only child, a daughter, was born. She then lived in Kellogg and in Newton and removed to Des Moines in July, 1888 where her husband died the following winter.

She began teaching in the first primary in Des Moines in the fall of 1891. She taught in Des Moines for nine years. Went to Talladega, Alabama and taught in Taladega college under A. M. A. for ten years. She has been sought since by A. M. A. but her health prevented her from accepting any further positions.
