Sarah Shafer was born in Switzerland county, Indiana, in 1853. She was united in marriage to John B. Bruce, April 23, 1869. To this union were born two sons, one of whom died Nov. 17, 1905. She passed away Jan. 15, 1908, making her 55 years of age at the time of her death.
For several years past she had been in failing health. She was taken to the Methodist hospital in Des Moines, and everything was done that could be done by loving hands to restore her to perfect health and when she seemed to be on the road to recovery and the hopes of her loved ones were encouraged to believe that she would soon be restored to her family, the messenger came in an hour that was most unexpected.
She leaves a good record, joined the M. E. church about the year 1886 under the administration of Brother Heckathorn. After moving to her home near Bevington, she became identified with the U.B. Church. During all these years she has been a consistent member. She was a kind mother and loving wife. When the summons came she was ready. She has gone to join that innumerable throng the Creator saw which no man could number.
She leaves a husband, one son, five sisters, one brother and three grand-children, to mourn her loss.
Funeral services were conducted at Blair Chapel, Friday, January 17th by Rev. Mercer, of the St. Charles M. E. church.

Word was received here this morning announcing the death of Mrs. John Bruce, of Crawford township. Mrs. Bruce was at the hospital, in Des Moines, and submitted to an operation, on Tuesday from which she died last night at midnight.

Mrs. Bruce, who had been very sick went to the hospital in Des Moines, last Saturday and died the following Wednesday. Her remains were brought back and buried at Blair Chapel Friday. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Mercer.
