Cumming

James Albertice Gifford, 80, passed away at home in Cumming, Iowa on Tuesday, April 26 from a battle with multiple myeloma. There will be a Celebration of Jim’s life at 2 p.m. Monday, May 2 at McLaren’s Funeral Chapel, 801 19th Street, West Des Moines, Iowa. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. A military graveside service and burial will be held later in the afternoon at Peru Cemetery in Peru, Iowa. Casket escorts will be Jim Gideon, Aaron Johnston, Justin Lundberg, Ed Meendering, Ben Stevens, and Jim Stevens. The American Legion Post 562 will form an honor guard at the service.

Jim was born on September 7, 1924 in Peru, Iowa to James Franklin Gifford and Lelia Marie Olgesbee. He graduated from Peru High School in 1941. Jim married Rose Jeanette Bird on December 15, 1945 in Pulaski County, Missouri.

Jim honorably served in the United States Army from 1943 until retiring in 1966 with the rank of Major. He then worked for the United States Postal Service. He was a faithful servant of First Baptist Church in Norwalk since 1975.

Jim is survived by wife, Rose Gifford of Cumming; son, Jim Gifford of Cumming; daughter, Chris (Roy) Stevens of Des Moines; grandchildren, Ruth (Juan Carlos) Diaz of El Paso, TX, Jim (Sandy) Stevens of Waukee and Ben Stevens of West Des Moines; four great-grandchildren; sister Sadie Gifford of Winterset; and brother Bill (Marcia) Gifford of Cumming.
