W. Bunker Upton French, 65, of Indianola died Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at his home.
A military graveside service was held Monday, March 11, at the Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery near Van Meter. Memorials may be directed to the Wymer VA Medical Foster Home (2004 N. 9th Street, Indianola IA 50125).
Bunker was born March 7, 1947, in Burlington, Iowa; the son of Wayne and Beulah (Walters) Upton. He graduated from Danville High School in Danville, Iowa, in 1966. Following his graduation he enlisted in the United States Marines, serving in Vietnam; he was discharged in 1972. He was a decorated soldier receiving the Presidential Unit Citation, a Combat Action Ribbon and Purple Hearts, among others. During his working years he was a tool and die maker working in California, Arizona and New Mexico. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Winterset.
He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Randy Upton.
He is survived by his sons, David and Richard French, both of Alaska; his mother, Jaye Coleman of California; siblings, Jan (Gary) Perry of California, Peggy (Duane) Siegfried of Missouri, Rollie (Lori) Ford of Texas; an aunt, Elaine Walters of Mt. Pleasant; and five grandchildren.
