Mary P. Westphal, 83, of Adel died of complications of a stroke Thursday at Adel Acres Care Center. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at McCalley Funeral Home in Adel, with burial at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery near Van Meter.

Mrs. Westphal was born in West Des Moines and had lived there and in Booneville as a youth. She had lived in the Van Meter area 60 years before moving to Adel. She was a homemaker and a member of Van Meter United Methodist Church, Van Meter Woman’s Club, and Van Meter Mother’s Day Away Club. She enjoyed traveling and playing cards and bingo.

She is survived by four daughters, Gretchen Chapman of Adel, Joyce Dittmer of West Des Moines, Jean Boughton of Norwalk and Susan Westphal Houston of Bermuda Dunes, Calif.; a son, Steven of Van Meter; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marion.

Friends may call after noon today at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 2 to 5 p.m. and where a prayer service will be held at 5 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa.
