Death Occurred Here Monday at Memorial Hospital; Aged 68 Years
George W. Brown of Winterset, a well-known Madison county resident most of his life, died Monday, Nov. 1, at Memorial hospital here. He was 68 years of age.
Mr. Brown was born in South township Sept. 1, 1897, a son of Samuel G. and Alice Barber Brown.
He was a carpenter by trade, and his life was spent in this county, except for eight years, during which he was employed in shipyards in California.
Early in life he became a member of the Early Chapel church, later transferring to the Patterson Methodist church.
He was a member of Madison lodge, I.O.O.F., for 47 years. He was also affiliated with the Rebekah lodge, Indianola Encampment lodge, Patriarchs Militant, and in 1962 was made captain of Canton Pioneer No. 3 in Des Moines.
Mr. Brown was married at St. Charles on May 1, 1923, to Carrie Sophia Hughes who survives him. He also leaves four brothers, John Brown of Peru, Ernest Brown of Churdan and Eugene and Arthur Brown of Patterson; and four sisters, Mrs. Mary Drake and Mrs. Elma Fogler of Patterson; Mrs. Geneva Bertholf of Winterset and Mrs. Florence Fairholm of Peru.
Funeral services were to be held this Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Collins Funeral home in Winterset conducted by the Rev. Leonard Root of St. Charles. Burial was to be made at Blair Chapel cemetery, with graveside ritual by Madison lodge, I.O.O.F.
