Fatally Stricken at Wheel of Pickup Enroute Home From Winterset
William H. DeBok, well-known farmer living near Patterson, died at the wheel of his pickup truck as he was returning home from Winterset this Tuesday. He was fatally stricken while driving along the highway, but managed to turn off the ignition switch. However, the pickup left the road and plunged through a fence before coming to a stop in a field.
Mr. DeBok was 70 years of age. He was born at Red Rock, in Marion county, on April 3, 1894, but had lived in Madison county for 60 years. He engaged in farming, and was widely-known as a breeder of purebred Hampshire hogs for 23 years. He also drove a school bus at Patterson, retiring from that in 1948 after 26 years. He had served as a member of the board of directors of the Patterson school district. He worked at the Iowa State fair annually for 32 years as a mounted policeman and gateman.
During World War I he served in the U.S. armed forces, and was a member of the American Legion post at Winterset.
Mr. DeBok was married Sept. 27, 1920, at Winterset, to Maybel Gentry, who survives him. He also leaves three daughters, Mrs. Leola Lull of Prole, Mrs. Leona Lyons of Booneville, and Mrs. Mayola Wetzell of Patterson; two sons, Hubert DeBok of Prole, and Herbert DeBok of Des Moines; 17 grandchildren; four brothers, Alfred, Howard and Dee DeBok of Winterset, and Gayle DeBok of Healdsburg, Calif.; and four sisters, Mrs. Cliff Harrell of Winterset, Mrs. Leonard Criss of Reno, Nev., Mrs. Gerald Briggs of Durham, Calif., and Mrs. Herman Young of Santa Monica, Calif.
Funeral services will be held this Friday at 2 p.m. from the Collins Funeral home in Winterset, in charge of C. A. McMurray. Burial will be made in the Mt. Pelier cemetery near Patterson.
