February 22, 2013OPAL MAE GARDNER – 1923 – 2013
Opal was born on August 31, 1923, at Brighton, Iowa to Villard and Junie (Sinn) Stone. She was married on November 28, 1965 at Hannibal, Missouri, to Walter Gardner.
Opal and her late husband, Walter, moved to Winterset in 1967. Walter was the owner and operator of the Western Auto Store where Opal helped with the operation. Following the closing of the store, Opal did volunteer work for several organizations and groups including the Madison County Meal Site, church soup suppers, and the Alzheimers support group. She truly loved to help other people.
Opal held interests in reading, learning new words in the dictionary and poetry (she also enjoyed composing poetry). She had been a longtime member of the First Baptist Church. Undoubtedly Opal's favorite pastime was enjoying spending time with her family, especially having fun with her grandchildren. Opal was a person who never knew a stranger.
